A Par-fect Golfing Paradise
The Algarve has some of the world’s best golf courses with many courses designed by some of golf’s most famous names. However, the story isn’t just in the designer with all courses having immaculate fairways and smooth greens, paired together with the fantastic scenery surrounding you, golfers will be in golfing paradise in the Algarve.
The Western Courses
The very west of the Algarve is home to the Parque da Floresta golf course. The architect of this green has created a fascinating course that presents visually attractive views of the surrounding countryside lined on the horizon by the sea. Heading towards the east you will arrive at the Boavista and Palmares golf courses. Boavista offers a variety of attractive and interesting holes. Palmares, an interesting course, is best known for its breathtaking scenery. Going a little further east but staying in the Western Algarve, there are ten golf courses to choose from. The grandfather of all courses in the Algarve is the Penina Championship Golf Course designed by Sir Henry Cotton in 1966.
The Central Courses
Going into the central courses of the Algarve, one of the most unique is the Pine Cliffs Golf Course. This is a unique course as it is set by a cliff and is only a nine-hole Par 32. One of the oldest courses can be found in central Algarve, aptly named the Old Course, of the Oceānico Group. This course was founded in 1969 and the Par 73 was designed by the great Frank Pennick. The Oceānico Victoria, designed by Arnold Palmer, is the longest 18 hole golf course in Portugal. The opulent area of Quinta do Lago has two golf courses right next to each other, Quinta do Lago North & Quinta do Lago South. The north and south Par 72 courses were both designed by W. Mitchell and R. Roquemore in 1974, providing gorgeous views.
The Eastern Courses
Castro Marim is a Par 71 golf course designed by Terry Murray. It is located close to Castro Marim. The new Quinta do Vale course was designed by the famous Severiano Ballesteros.
The planned Quinta do Vale Golf Resort private holiday village is due for completion in October 2010. The resort will include fifty-seven fully equipped homes which are supported by a range of infrastructures and facilities, a reception area with restaurant and bar, swimming pools, as well as fantastic views of the stunning Guadiana River and golf course.
